A while back, we had the pleasure of sharing with you DTMD’s debut video for “You” off their EP The Basics. The duo has been hard at work, in their own words, “building their resumé”. They were recently featured in a documentary appropriately title Go Hard Or Go Home, directed by Khiry Loines. In the short film, DTMD explain to us why they make music and, humorously, how they come about making music.
The incredible chemistry they share as a team, after having made music along side one another since they were in middle school, truly makes it a joy to watch. Something about the ‘behind-the-scenes’ and easy going demeanor of the film leaves you wanting to watch/learn more after the 18 or so minutes.
You might be familiar with Diplo’s name/sound. The Philly based DJ/producer, known for effortlessly fusing electro/dance/reggae/hip hop in his projects, has worked with artists such as M.I.A., Santigold, Nina Sky, and Snoop Dogg to name a few.. Together with fellow DJ/Producer Switch, they created Major Lazer under Diplo’s label Mad Decent and released Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Doin 2009.
I must admit, La Roux , electropop group from London, and DJ/producer duo Major Lazer’s collaboration project Lazerproof has been sitting in my iTunes waiting for me to come around and give it a respectable play and I must also say, I’m impressed. This mixtape couldn’t flow more smoothly! I guess that’s what you get when you have two DJ’s behind it, right?
The project kicks off with a remix of La Roux’s single “Bulletproof” and features Drake and Gucci Mane, among other artists.
After seeing K-Beta’s name/mixtape pop up here and there on my timeline for a while (literally…), I decided to finally download it and boy am I sorry I didn’t have this in my possession earlier…
DMV artist K-Beta (pronounced K-BAY-TUH) takes listeners on “a nice little ride through the past two decades of rap” by spitting over some of the most memorable instrumentals from 1989 to 2009, year-by-year. I was impressed by his versatility as well as his ability to demolish each track from the high energy R.U.N. (Rob U Now), an homage to LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” down to the meticulous, Notorious B.I.G-like story telling in “Story to Tell”. K-Beta takes on the challenge of channeling the influences/originators of the track while infusing his own style almost effortlessly, making the songs his own.
Mixed by DC’s own DJ Alizay (who discovered Wale and played a key role in the rise of his career), 89 to 09 has something for every hip hop fan…both old and new.
P.S. Look out for the bonus track “Sneak Preview 2″ produced by Best Kept Secret.
Download 89 to 09 here and let it take you back to when you fell in love with hip hop!

A few days ago, The Phli Hi Club released the video for Shawn Morris’s new single “Animal”.Fortunately, if you enjoyed the single, it’s now available for download (and for free, our favorite flavor) here at ThePhliHiClub.com!
The track was produced by Justin Rose of The Phli Hi Club and features Mani Dorsey (also of The Phli Hi Club).
The Phli Hi Club’s very own Shawn Morris just dropped a video for his new single (off of his second mixtape Key to Freedom) ”Animal” featuring/introducing his label mate Mani Dorsey and produced by none other than Justin Rose. Shot in Philly, the video (directed by Ryan Wright of OWProductions) finally puts a face behind the music we’ve been serving you.
If you have a pulse, chances are you’re looking for some summer music to ride/chill/etc to. Lucky for you, you don’t have to search much further (for now..). The Cool Kids (a duo originally from the Mid-West — the birth place of some of hip hop’s greatest, depending on who you ask) dropped their mixtape Tacklebox yesterday. If you’re not familiar with their sound, please be advised that computer/laptop speakers will not do it any justice! Those of you who are familiar will be pleased to find Chuck Inglish delivers with the hard beats while he and Mikey Rocks (with his ever so smooth flow) bless the mic in a tag team manner reminiscent of classic hip hop groups/duos such as Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.
Our deepest apologies for the neglect, but we’ve come bearing a gift!
The Phli Hi Club’s very own Shawn Morris has just released a new single and you can download it exclusively here at ThePhliHiClub.com. The track, featuring Justin Rose on the hook (he also produced the song), comes just in time for summer (wherever she is..) as sort of a summer anthem.
Lupe Fiasco gave us a taste of what’s to be expected from his next album Lasers (scheduled to drop later this year) by dropping the mesmerizing single “I’m Beamin’” (produced by the Neptunes — yes, both Pharrell and Chad on the same record again) back in January.
Personally, I like the sound of Lupe Fiasco over the ever so dazzling sounds of the Neptunes. Not to be outdone by the producer counterparts, Fiasco lyrically delivers on the track so it was a nice treat for loyal and new fans alike. (For those of you who are unsure where you stand, don’t let this Chicagoan “backflip on the mattress you slept on him on”. )
Check out the video below and tell us what you think.
Enjoy.
A few days ago, ThePhliHiClub.com brought you M.I.A.’s new single “Born Free” from an untitled project scheduled to be released later on this year.
Today, the controversial singer/songwriter/rapper/whatever you choose to label her released a video for “Born Free” via her twitter. The video was quickly banned from YouTube (and rumor has it, it’s banned from being played in the U.S. )for it’s violent nature but thankfully, it’s lurking elsewhere on the internet.
